Tooth Filling Lake Oswego, OR
Tooth Filling provided by Dr. Carly Petersen
in Lake Oswego, OR at The Dentist on Boones Ferry
There are different ways of restoring a cracked, decayed, or broken tooth.
Our dentist, Carly C. Petersen, DMD, may recommend dental fillings if the damage is not too extensive.
A filling helps repair the tooth and prevent pain, sensitivity, or infection from happening. Sometimes, when a filling is not an option, we may recommend inlays and onlays, or another restoration.
Filling Materials
Depending on the nature of the damage and the location, we may use different kinds of materials. Filling materials include amalgam, porcelain, gold alloys, glass ionomer, and tooth-colored composite resin.
If you need a tooth filling for back teeth, you want a material that is able to withstand the force of chewing. Our team at The Dentist on Boones Ferry will advise you on the most appropriate material to use.
Types of Tooth Fillings
Dr. Petersen will apply traditional fillings by placing them in the tooth without taking the material to a lab for fabrication.
There are also indirect fillings that are made in a lab before placing them on or in your tooth. These fillings require several appointments, usually two visits to our Lake Oswego office. Dr. Petersen gets a model or impression of the tooth to get its shape. Also, the impression records the shape of the nearby teeth. Indirect fillings may be available as onlays and inlays.
Temporary fillings are another type and they are intended to provide short-time protection to the teeth. These fillings are placed while the final ones are being made. You will come back to our office to have the final filling.
Procedure for Tooth Fillings
Dr. Petersen will begin by numbing the site with local anesthesia. If there is decay, we will remove it and clean the hole or cavity. Cleaning the tooth removes bacterial plaque and debris that would be present.
A liner made of a special material like composite resin may be placed inside the tooth if the decay affected the areas near the root. The liner offers protection to the nerves of the tooth.
Once the hole is filled, our dentist finishes the tooth and polishes it.
There may be extra steps for this procedure if you are getting tooth-colored resin fillings. When our dentist removes decay and cleans the hole, they place the tooth-colored filling in layers. Using a special light, they cure the material to harden it. The curing is done after each layer until the desired layers are applied. Once done with that, the dentist shapes the material in order to get the desired outcome. Trimming off the material and polishing it helps give the desired shape and look to the tooth.
FAQ's About Tooth Fillings
How do I know if I need a tooth filling?
Signs that you may need a tooth filling include tooth sensitivity, visible holes or dark spots on your teeth, pain when eating or drinking, and a rough feeling on the surface of a tooth. Regular dental check-ups can help detect cavities early before they cause significant discomfort or damage.
What should I expect after getting a tooth filling?
After getting a tooth filling, it's normal to experience some sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure. This sensitivity typically subsides within a few days. If you continue to experience discomfort or if the filling feels high when you bite, contact your dentist for an adjustment.
How long do tooth fillings last?
The lifespan of a tooth filling depends on the material used and your oral hygiene habits. On average, fillings can last anywhere from 5 to 15 years. Regular dental check-ups and good oral care can help extend the life of your fillings.
Can tooth fillings fall out?
Yes, tooth fillings can fall out due to factors such as decay around the filling, biting on hard foods, or normal wear and tear over time. If a filling falls out, it's important to see your dentist as soon as possible to avoid further damage or infection.
Can I eat normally after getting a tooth filling?
You can generally eat normally after getting a tooth filling, but it's advisable to avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks for a few days if you experience sensitivity. Additionally, avoid chewing on hard foods or biting down directly on the filled tooth for the first 24 hours to allow the filling to set properly.
Are there any risks associated with tooth fillings?
Tooth fillings are generally safe, but there can be some risks such as allergic reactions to the filling material, tooth sensitivity, or discomfort. In rare cases, a filling might crack or leak, leading to decay beneath the filling. Regular dental visits help to monitor and address any issues promptly.
How do I care for my tooth fillings?
Caring for tooth fillings involves maintaining good oral hygiene practices such as brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings. Avoiding very hard or sticky foods can also help prevent damage to your fillings.
Can I get a tooth filling while pregnant?
Yes, getting a tooth filling while pregnant is generally considered safe. However, it's important to inform your dentist about your pregnancy. They may recommend postponing elective procedures until after the first trimester and will take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of you and your baby.
Can a tooth with a filling get a cavity?
Yes, a tooth with a filling can still get a cavity, particularly around the edges of the filling. It's important to maintain good oral hygiene and have regular dental check-ups to detect and treat any new cavities early.
