Dr. Petersen speaking to patient sitting in dental exam chair at The Dentist on Boones Ferry in Lake Oswego, ORAt first, your teeth look bright and white and you happily enjoy displaying that beautiful smile. But as time goes on, you realize that the beautiful smile you had some years ago has gone away. Your teeth have been darkening and losing their luster.

Stains and discoloration can rob you of your bright, white smile. A teeth whitening procedure can help when you find yourself in this situation. Whether you want to restore a beautiful smile as you prepare for that special event or you just want to brighten your smile, teeth whitening can do the trick.

Our team at The Dentist on Boones Ferry performs teeth whitening to beautify your teeth and restore confidence as you show your smile.

Why Whiten Your Teeth?

Often, teeth can turn yellow and dull as we age. This arises because of drinks and food consumed over time. Drinking tea, coffee, wine, and other beverages that stain teeth leads to tooth discoloration. Smoking tobacco is also another reason teeth can become stained. While brushing after eating and drinking something can help reduce staining, it does not work sufficiently enough to eradicate stains entirely. But your teeth can be restored when you visit us for a whitening treatment.

In-Office Whitening vs. Take-Home Whitening Solutions

You may decide to choose between in-office whitening and take-home whitening trays. While both serve to whiten your teeth, they work differently, and the timeline for getting results varies. Take-home whitening trays work a bit more slowly than the in-office whitening treatment. If you do not have time to have the whitening done in our dental office, we commend you get the take-home whitening trays.

If you opt for the in-office whitening, we start the procedure by getting a shade of the teeth that serve as the benchmark to compare with the results we get. Dr. Petersen will place what is known as a cheek retractor to expose your teeth. The dentist then covers the eyes, gums, and lips so that they are protected from the bleaching agent we use to whiten teeth. Your lips and gum may be burnt by the gel if we do not cover them.

The dentist then applies the whitening gel and allows it to stay on for about 10 minutes. The gel has hydrogen peroxide or other active ingredients that remove stains. Dr. Petersen rinses the mouth and polishes your teeth. This procedure is repeated until the desired shade of teeth is obtained.

If you prefer take-home whitening trays, Dr. Petersen begins by getting a mouth impression. The impression or model is used to make the trays in a laboratory. We provide a gel that is poured into the trays before placing them in the mouth. Since the trays are able to fit securely on the teeth, the gel does not leak. The whitening process may take about seven to 14 days to obtain the results you want.

FAQ's About Teeth Whitening

How long does teeth whitening last?

The results of teeth whitening can last from several months to up to two years, depending on your oral hygiene habits, diet, and lifestyle. Regular brushing, flossing, and avoiding staining foods and drinks can help maintain your whitening results longer.

Are there any side effects of teeth whitening?

Some people may experience tooth sensitivity or gum irritation after teeth whitening. These side effects are usually temporary and subside within a few days. Using toothpaste for sensitive teeth and following your dentist's instructions can help minimize discomfort.

Can anyone get their teeth whitened?

Most people can benefit from teeth whitening, but it's not suitable for everyone. Individuals with gum disease, tooth decay, or extreme tooth sensitivity should address these issues before undergoing whitening. Additionally, teeth whitening does not work on crowns, veneers, or fillings. Consult with your dentist to determine if you are a good candidate.

How can I maintain my teeth whitening results?

To maintain your teeth whitening results, practice good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly. Avoid foods and drinks that can stain your teeth, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco. Consider using a whitening toothpaste and touch-up treatments as recommended by your dentist.

How soon will I see results from teeth whitening?

Results from teeth whitening can often be seen after the first treatment. However, optimal results usually require multiple sessions or consistent use of at-home whitening products over a period of time. Your dentist can provide a timeline based on your specific treatment plan.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes, teeth whitening is generally considered safe when performed or supervised by a dental professional. Over-the-counter whitening products are also safe when used as directed. It’s important to follow your dentist’s recommendations to avoid overuse or misuse of whitening products, which can lead to tooth sensitivity or enamel damage.

Can teeth whitening remove all types of stains?

Teeth whitening is most effective on extrinsic stains, which are stains on the outer surface of the teeth caused by foods, drinks, and smoking. Intrinsic stains, which are deeper discolorations within the tooth, may not respond as well to whitening and may require alternative treatments such as veneers or bonding. Your dentist can advise on the best approach for your specific type of stains.

How often can I whiten my teeth?

The frequency of teeth whitening treatments depends on the method used and your individual needs. Professional in-office treatments may be done once or twice a year, while at-home treatments may be used more frequently as directed by your dentist. Overuse of whitening products can lead to tooth sensitivity and enamel damage, so it's important to follow professional guidance.

Does teeth whitening work on dental restorations?

No, teeth whitening does not work on dental restorations such as crowns, veneers, or fillings. These materials do not respond to whitening agents in the same way as natural tooth enamel. If you have dental restorations, discuss with your dentist the best way to achieve a uniform tooth color.

What should I do if I experience sensitivity after teeth whitening?

If you experience sensitivity after teeth whitening, use toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth and avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks. Sensitivity usually subsides within a few days. If the discomfort persists, contact your dentist for further advice and possible adjustments to your whitening regimen.
